He added that it is unacceptable for ships to circumvent international sanctions, violate maritime law and finance the war that Russia has been waging against Ukraine for more than four years.
The Atlantic Maritime Prefecture said in a separate statement on Monday that the French navy had intervened on an oil tanker more than 740 kilometers west of the tip of Brittany, which was coming from Murmansk in Russia, Reuters writes.
– The aim of this operation was to check the nationality of a ship that was suspected of sailing under a false flag. After the inspection team boarded, a review of the documentation confirmed suspicions of irregularities related to the flag under which the ship sailed. In accordance with international law and at the request of the prosecution, the ship was diverted – it is stated in the statement.
The Maritime Prefecture did not name the vessel.
