NBA Europe CEO George Aivazoglou confirmed that the project will begin in October 2027, adding that teams from Rome, Milan (Italy), London, Manchester (Great Britain), Paris, Lyon (France), Madrid, Barcelona (Spain), Berlin, Munich (Germany), one team from Athens (Greece) and Istanbul (Turkey) will play in the competition.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently described the possible start of the planned league in 2027 as ambitiousbut he didn’t rule it out. He said he didn’t want to wait any longer than 2028.

Aivazoglou did not say which teams would participate. In addition to the 12 permanent participants from the twelve host cities, four more teams will be able to compete qualify for the NBA Euroleague via Fiba Euroleague or national leagues.
It will be a semi-open format with 16 teams – 12 permanent, plus four based on sports results: one from the FIBA Champions League, which is our partner, and three more from domestic leagues. That’s it the most interesting part because it gives everyone something to strive forsaid Aivazoglou.
The general manager of NBA Europe also hinted that in the future NBA teams could play against NBA Europe clubs.
