Today’s signing of the contract on the design and construction of a new boiler house as part of the project “Improving the energy efficiency of the Zenica Cantonal Hospital” marked the official start of the realization of one of the most important infrastructure projects in the field of health in the Zenica-Doboj Canton – the construction of the new Zenica Cantonal Hospital.
The total value of the project is 19,285,081 euros, and the project is realized in several phases: construction of a new boiler house with a capacity of 9 MW worth 3 million euros, heating of existing facilities (3,850,981 euros), construction of a new and upgrade of an existing facility (9,600,000 euros), construction of a gas pipeline (1,330,000 euros) and supervision and design of works worth 1,235,000 euros.
The contract for the construction of a new boiler house, with a total value of 3,503,123.25 euros including VAT, was signed by dr. Tarik Zulović, director of the Zenica Cantonal Hospital, and Mehmed Mahmutović, director of the company Unioninvest dd Sarajevo, as a representative of the contractor.
The financial construction of the project was secured through loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in the amount of 10 million euros, as well as grant funds from the European Union and co-financing from the Government of Zenica-Doboj Canton and the City of Zenica.
The ceremony of signing the contract was attended by the Prime Minister of the Zenica-Doboj Canton, Prof. Ph.D. Nezir Pivić, Minister of Health Dr. Aida Salčinović, director of the EBRD in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Stella Melnic, and head of the Department for Responsible Institutional Management in the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Karel Lizerot.
The hospital will receive a modern heating and ventilation system, thermal insulation, new carpentry and a new energy-efficient facility with an area of 2,800 square meters. This will significantly reduce energy consumption and the emission of harmful gases, and provide patients and staff with more comfortable and healthier working and living conditions.

Energy efficiency is one of the most effective ways to reduce pollution and protect public health and is a key part of the EU’s Green Agenda. Energy consumption in BiH is still four times higher than the EU average, which shows the potential for savings and modernization. The EU remains committed to Bosnia and Herzegovina on its path to sustainable development and harmonization with European standards – said Karel Lizerot.

— Today’s signing of the contract marked the beginning of the first phase of the New Cantonal Hospital. The premises in which we will implement energy efficiency measures are newly built and will not be removed. This will be followed by the construction of a boiler house, which will result in cleaner air in our city, but also bring a number of other benefits. The Oncology building is also included in the first phase, which should have about 8,000 square meters, which is of particular importance. In the coming days, a public invitation will be issued for the preparation of the conceptual design of the rest of the new Cantonal Hospital, so that next year we will have a large construction site in this area – said Prime Minister Nezir Pivić.
The start of work on the construction of the new boiler house and accompanying infrastructure is planned for the beginning of next year, which will begin the first phase of the realization of the project of the New Cantonal Hospital Zenica.
