As of January 1, people can only smoke in public spaces if they are at least 10 meters away from other people or face a fine of up to 240 euros.
The second largest Italian city has banned smoking in playgrounds, cemeteries, bus stops, parks and sports facilities in 2021.
The new ban only applies to traditional tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars or cigarillos, as people can still smoke electronic cigarettes outdoors, reports Hina.
The move implements an ordinance passed by the city council several years ago in an attempt to improve air quality and comes as other European cities are also considering outdoor smoking bans.
Milan, a key financial and economic center with more than 1.3 million inhabitants, is one of the most polluted cities in Italy.
The ban aims to reduce health risks, since about 9,000 people die annually in Italy due to tobacco use. Cigarette smoking in the Lombardy region accounts for 7 percent of particulate matter emissions, according to official data.
