During the year 2025, in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, an increase in the total amount of wastewater was recorded, but also a significant increase in its treatment, according to data from the Federal Bureau of Statistics.
A total of 77,060,000 cubic meters of wastewater was recorded, which represents an increase of 1.6 percent compared to 2024. At the same time, the amount of purified wastewater reached 47,975,000 cubic meters, that is, 11.1 percent more than a year earlier.
Statistical data also show the continuation of the expansion of the sewage infrastructure. The length of the sewage network in the Federation of BiH in 2025 was 3,603 kilometers, which is an increase of 2.4 percent compared to the previous year. The number of sewage connections also increased, with 273,557 recorded, that is, 2.3 percent more than in 2024.
The Federal Bureau of Statistics states that data on public sewage is collected through a regular annual statistical survey, and is submitted by utility companies and municipal services that manage public sewage systems in the covered settlements.
Waste water is considered to be water that after use is taken to a treatment plant or discharged into the environment, i.e. into surface or underground water. This category does not include atmospheric or flowing waters, such as those used for the operation of hydroelectric power plants.
Purified wastewater is considered to be all quantities that have undergone primary, secondary or tertiary treatment during the reporting year.
Primary treatment involves the application of physical or chemical purification procedures which, before discharge, reduce the biological oxygen demand (BOD5) by at least 20 percent, while the amount of total suspended matter is reduced by at least 50 percent.
Secondary treatment includes biological or other purification methods that reduce the concentration of suspended solids and BOD5 in wastewater by between 70 and 90 percent, while the chemical oxygen demand (COD) is reduced by at least 75 percent. Acts.
