Families of victims of the Sicilian mafia have expressed fear that more than 20 mobsters freed in the last three months could return to the neighborhoods they once controlled, reports Al Jazeera Balkans.
Most of these mobsters, some of whom had leading roles in the main mafia families of the Sicilian capital Palermo, never renounced Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian mafia, and always refused to cooperate with judicial authorities, Tanjug reported, citing the Guardian.
They are released on temporary leave or for good behavior.
– The release of mobsters who have always refused to cooperate with justice is always extremely dangerous. It is a fatal blow to the fight against the mafia – said Salvatore Borsellino, brother of the legendary anti-mafia judge Paolo Borsellino, who was killed by Cosa Nostra in 1992.
Nino Morana Agostino, the nephew of police officer Nino Agostino, who was murdered in broad daylight in 1989 along with his wife Ida, who was five months pregnant, told the Repubblica newspaper that “we cannot afford to let our guard down in the fight against the mafia or that underestimate”.
– Mobsters who have been sentenced to life in prison and are now being released on parole continue to keep secrets about unsolved mob murders that they have refused to admit. That is why their release sends a bad signal – he pointed out.
