The European Union (EU) has warned today that there could suspend the visa-free regime for Georgia citizens, due to the repression of the country’s opposition and marketing in the field of democracy.
“Today, we are sending a letter to Georgia regarding the visa-free regime,” said the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security Kaja Kallas in Brussels.
According to her, there are a number of conditions that Georgia must meet, and if it does not, the EU will be forced to abolish the right to Georgian citizens on entry into the EU without visas.
Kallas did not specify what exactly the terms of the word or which is the deadline for their fulfillment.
The EU has previously criticized Georgian authorities for arrest politicians, activists and journalists who are critically settled towards the ruling party.
Brussels believes that the government’s actions, with the adoption of laws that suppress civil society, seriously violated the European path of Georgia and its chances for EU membership.
Several members of the Union supports the sanction of Georgian authorities, and a proposal for sanctions for judges who participated in the closure of opposition leaders is also being discussed.
However, Hungary – ally of the Georgian ruling party Georgian San – has so far blocked EU attempts to introduce concrete measures against tbilisies.
