Civil police in Rio de Janeiro have confirmed that another police officer, wounded during Brazil’s deadliest anti-drug operation, has died, bringing the death toll in the operation to five.
This is the largest number of police officers who have died in a single raid in that country, reports Reuters.
The operation was carried out on October 28 in the Penha and Alemao favela complexes in the north of Rio de Janeiro, and a total of 122 people died in it.
Governor Claudio Castro described the raid as a success, while human rights groups condemned the actions of security forces, citing a high death toll and what they described as excessive brutality.
The police action was directed against members of Comando Vermelho, a long-standing criminal organization with a foothold in Rio and other parts of Brazil.
