According to the latest data from the Statistical Office, Germany recorded a loss of more than 486,000 jobs in the first quarter. With the rising cost of living and increasingly expensive rent, an increasing number of workers from the Balkans are thinking about returning to their homeland.
Everyday pressure
One of them shared his dilemma in the “Life in Germany” group, stating that he has been living in that country for nine years, but that he is increasingly tired of the daily pressure.
– I have been living in Germany for nine years and I feel more and more tired. My salary is 2,300 euros, I pay 1,050 euros for an apartment, 280 euros for kindergarten, everything goes. The parents are in Bosnia and Herzegovina and are getting older. The children here barely speak our language. Sometimes I think we should go back. Has anyone returned after so many years and did you regret it – he wrote.
A discussion followed, and many members of the group shared their experiences of returning from Germany.
Giuliano wrote that he returned a few months ago and that, although he now has a lower salary, he feels that he lives better.
– I came back three months ago. My salary is 300 euros less, but I eat and drink with my family just like in Germany. I simply live a much better quality life, without stress, that’s for sure. The happiness of my children, my wife and myself has no price that would bring me back to Germany, to that stress and lifestyle. Even if I were hungry and on the street, I wouldn’t go back. If you can earn 2,300 euros there, and in your country you can work for a few hundred euros less, the life you will live here and there is heaven and earth – he stated.
One of the comments was of a humorous nature, with the message that the return is not easy:
– Don’t go back, it’s dangerous. People are dying of hunger, there is no electricity or water. They have to watch games and cheer all night. Everyone’s fingers were burnt from taking the lamb off the grill. They are forced to sit in cafes. The sea is an hour or two away, so they have to swim in salt water. You find a job in half an hour and there is no more laziness – one user wrote.
Mirjana shared her experience and said that she had no regrets after returning.
– I returned four years ago and I have not regretted it. I work for less pay, but my heart and soul are full. You have to decide what and how. Only, it’s a foreign country and life flies by quickly. Good luck, whatever you decide – she said.
Ivica stated that after his return he started his own business.
– I came back from Germany five years and three months ago. I opened a company, currently six of us are employed. It must be done in every country. I’m here on mine, I don’t pay rent, I don’t pay overpriced insurance, I don’t pay annual car taxes. My stress is generally less. Generally speaking, I did not make a mistake – he wrote.
One of the commentators said that he will return himself, even though it will mean significantly less earnings.
– If you are unhappy and your heart clearly sends you signals that it is time to go back, go. I’m coming back, hopefully by the end of the year, and for a salary nine times lower than here abroad. The heart has decided. If we die, we die together, I mean metaphorically – he wrote.
Living in Germany is a safer option
Ivan pointed out that his return did not bring him disappointment, he writes Avaz.
– I haven’t regretted it for a second. I lived well in Germany, bought a house and lived better than 50 percent of Germans, but home is home – he said.

– Don’t come back, you’re better off in Germany. You work, you pay the bills, you’ve been a tenant all your life, you can’t wait for the summer to go to your hometown.
