Sudanese commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan told Al Arabiya on Thursday that there would be no talks with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary force unless the group lays down its arms.
– We will not sit down with the Rapid Support Force unless they lay down their arms – al-Burhan said.
– The withdrawal of the rebels and the laying down of their weapons is a basic condition for the success of any truce – he added, while the regional powers and the US are trying to achieve a turnaround in the devastating war.
He also emphasized that the army does not include any members of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Al-Burhan added that the conflict must first be resolved on the battlefield, and only then can other steps follow.
Attempts to mediate between al-Burhan and his former deputy, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, have repeatedly failed during a war that has claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced 12 million people and created the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crisis.
Trump first took an interest in the war last month, vowing to end it after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged him to get involved.
– We welcome every opportunity that brings true peace – added Burhan.
