A ceasefire along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border was observed on Thursday, after dozens of soldiers and civilians were killed in cross-border clashes.
In Spin Boldak, the epicenter of recent clashes on the Afghan side, an AFP reporter saw shops reopening and residents returning to homes they fled during the fighting.
The aim of the 48-hour ceasefire is to give time to “find a positive solution through constructive dialogue”, claims the Pakistani side.
Shortly after the ceasefire came into effect, at 6:00 pm Pakistan time on Wednesday, AFP reporters in Afghanistan heard a brief burst of gunfire on the border.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk welcomed the ceasefire and appealed to “both sides to prevent further harm to civilians and commit to a permanent ceasefire”.
The announcement of the ceasefire was preceded by new explosions in the Afghan capital, for which the Taliban government did not accuse Pakistan.
Violence erupted last week with explosions in Kabul and southeastern Afghanistan, which the Taliban government blamed on Islamabad.
