The Bulgarian government announced today that it is withdrawing the controversial budget proposal for next year, after demonstrations in which tens of thousands of people participated.
The opposition and certain parliamentary groups have warned that plans for higher taxes, increased social security contributions and increased spending could harm investments and expand the shadow economy.

The government first promised to withdraw the draft for revision after protests last Sunday, but later refused to do so, sparking demonstrations in Sofia and other major cities on Monday night.
Organizers said 50,000 people attended the protest in Sofia.
The protest in Sofia began peacefully, but at one point the demonstrators started to clash with the police.
Demonstrators carried banners that read “Generation Z is coming”, “Young Bulgaria without the mafia”.
The organizers of the protest appealed to the demonstrators to remain peaceful, warning them of possible provocations.
The situation escalated when a small group of demonstrators came to the premises of the ruling party and started throwing bottles, firecrackers and stones.
The police announced that 10 people were arrested. Emergency services stated that several people were injured.
