Two drug cartel members were killed in the attack, while two others survived and were later rescued by the US Navy, according to the Americans. The survivors will be returned to their home countries – Colombia and Ecuador.
US officials point out that such semi-submerged ships are increasingly being used to smuggle drugs from South America to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, where the shipments are then transferred to the United States.
