The Hungarian government announced that a meeting between Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would be possible only on the condition that Ukraine fulfills Budapest’s demands regarding the position of the Hungarian national minority in that country.
As Euronews reports, citing Hungarian government spokesmen, a personal meeting could take place only after progress in technical negotiations on this issue.
The government in Budapest states that the talks between the two sides are already underway and that a positive outcome of those negotiations would open up space for a meeting at a high political level.
During the last weeks, the Hungarian authorities have repeatedly highlighted the possibility of a meeting between Peter Magyar and Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and Beregovo in Zakarpattia Oblast was previously mentioned as a potential location.
The Hungarian side previously said that it expects greater rights for the Hungarian minority in Ukraine before supporting Kiev’s further progress towards the European Union.
