The explosion of a fuel tank truck in Nigeria killed 18 people, the National Road Safety Agency announced.
Agency spokesman Olusegun Ogungbemide said the truck’s brakes failed and the driver lost control, hitting more than ten vehicles on the highway.
He stated that 10 people were rescued with varying degrees of injuries.
“Unfortunately, the remaining 18 victims were burnt beyond recognition,” Ogungbemide said.
Accidents involving tankers have become common in Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil producer, which authorities blame on poor roads and reckless driving.
Accidents often result in dozens of deaths.
