American 41-year-old skier Lindsey Vonn became the oldest winner of a race in the World Cup, climbing to the top of the podium in the downhill in Switzerland. Moritz, where on Friday she swept her competitors and achieved her first victory in the World Cup after more than seven and a half years.
Former record holder, legendary Swiss Didier Cuchehe was 37 years old when he achieved his last World Cup victory, in the 2012 Crans Montana super-G.
Before today’s triumph of the American skier, the oldest winner in the women’s competition was an Italian woman Federica Brignonewho in March of this year, as a 34-year-old, celebrated in the super giant slalom in La Thuile, writes HRT.
On Friday, Vonn was the only one to cover the 2.5-kilometer Corviglia course in under 90 seconds, posting a time of one minute, 29.63 seconds that earned her her 83rd career victory and 44th in the downhill.
This is her second downhill victory in St. Moritz. She achieved her first in 2012, and she was the fastest in the super-giant slalom three more times on this ski resort, and she also celebrated once in the alpine combined.
Vonn’s last World Cup victory before today’s triumph achieved in March 2018., also downhill, at the World Cup finals in Åre, Sweden.
The only one who managed to come close to Lindsey Vonn’s winning time by less than one second was, surprisingly, the 24-year-old Austrian Magdalena Egger. With starting number 27, she reached the first podium of her career in the World Cup, trailing the winner by 98 hundredths.
Third place was won by an experienced 33-year-old Austrian skier Miriam Puchnerwho was more than one second behind Vonn (+1.16), but it was enough for her to be on the podium for the ninth time in her career.
After eight of the 37 races on the World Cup calendar, the American is in the lead Mikaela Shiffrin with 458 points. In second place is the Albanian representative Lara Colturi with 302 points, and New Zealander Alice Robinson is in third place with 294.
The best Croatian female skier Zrinka Ljutić with 218 points is in ninth place in the ranking for the Great Crystal Globe.
Skiers will on Saturday in St. Moritz to ride another downhill, and on Sunday the first super-G in the new World Cup season is scheduled.
