Rakitić’s farewell letter We convey in full:
“Dear football,
You were part of my life from my first day. From the field in Möhlin, my hometown in Switzerland, to the world’s largest stadiums, you were always there. You gave me the first chance in Basel. I was happy, but impatient, but now you teach me to believe that everything is possible. And that was just the beginning. I grew up with you in Schalke. It was my first departure from home and learned to face new challenges, new cultures and new lessons. You taught me to open a new door that way.
That’s how I arrived in Seville. And there I experienced something different. You gave me so much more, you gave me home. I had the honor of being a captain, raise your first big trophy, and most importantly, I met my life through you through you. Thanks to you, I found my peace, got my daughters. I created my little family, thanks to you.
Then Barcelona came. You taught me to live a dream that I wouldn’t even dare dream. I played with the best, he won the largest trophies and was part of the Club History. You gave me the opportunity to play with the biggest, against the biggest and the biggest ones. You let me go back to Seville, to close the circle, to say thanks, to feel at home again. And then, to be the captain again.
And again you showed me something new. When I was the most peaceful man, you took me to a new country, in Al Shabbab. It was a special experience, where I felt I gave something new and that I got something new. Thank you for that.
Return to the roots. For the first time I put on the drier of Loved Hajduk Split … These were the tears I would wear with me forever. I couldn’t even dream that I would have the opportunity to play for my homeland, for Croatia, in the European and World Championships, against the best in the world.
Footballs, you gave me more than I ever dreamed of. You gave me friends, emotions, joy and tears. You gave me your whole life, because of you, I’ll stay a child forever. Now is the time for forgiveness. Because even though I’m leaving you, I know you’ll never leave me.

Rakitić is one of the best and most trophy footballers in Croatia’s history. He lasted for his professional career for 20 years. He played for Basel, Schalke (with whom he won the German Cup), Sevilla (two Europe League), Barcelona (four La League and King Cups and one Champions League), Al Shabab and Hajduk from clubs.
As for the national team, he played for all young selections of Switzerland, and for U-21 and Senior Croatia. The conqueror is silver from SPs 2018. He played 106 games for Croatia and scored 15 goals.
