German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the expansionist rhetoric of the newly elected US President Donald Trump, which is directed against Greenland, Canada and Panama, is cause for concern.
Scholz said at the Congress of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in Berlin that “uncertain times” are ahead in relations with Washington, assessing that “certain forces in America” are working “to destroy democratic institutions in the West”, reported Bloomberg.
The chancellor pointed out that the principle of inviolability of borders applies to every country and that this is the essence of Western values.
At the party congress of the SPD on Saturday, Scholz was officially appointed as a candidate for chancellor in the upcoming parliamentary elections and the party’s election program was adopted.
Christian Democratic Union (CDU) chancellor candidate Friedrich Mertz said the criticism would not faze Trump and that Germany should focus on restoring its own economic and military strength.
According to polls, the center-right bloc CDU/CSU (Christian Social Union of Bavaria) has about 31 percent of voter support, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) had about 20 percent, the SPD 17 percent, and the Greens 12 percent. Trump’s ally, American billionaire Elon Musk recently supported the AfD ahead of the German elections scheduled for February 23.
