Russian air defenses have destroyed 77 Ukrainian drones launched overnight, Russia’s defense ministry said Sunday, as both sides continue cross-border airstrikes in the nearly four-year-old war.
According to the ministry, the drones were shot down over seven regions in southern and central Russia, as well as over Crimea, which is under Russian control. The information was published in an official post on Telegram.
In the Rostov region, which borders Ukraine and is located about 1,000 kilometers south of Moscow, a transmission line was damaged, which left about 250 residents without electricity, Rostov governor Yuriy Sliusar said, noting that there were no injuries.
The Russian Ministry of Defense says that 42 drones were shot down over the Saratov region in the southwest of the country, and 12 over the Rostov region.
Russian authorities rarely disclose the full extent of damage caused by Ukrainian airstrikes and almost never confirm hits on military infrastructure.
The war is increasingly marked by long-range drone and missile attacks, far from the front lines, as both sides seek to strike military, logistical and energy targets deep in the opponent’s territory.
Moscow has carried out missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s power grid and cities in previous winters, causing power outages and putting extra pressure on repair crews as the cold spell approaches.
Kiev, on the other hand, has stepped up attacks on oil depots, airports and other targets inside Russia, often presenting them as a legitimate reaction to Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure.
