Rubio: The US must prevent the spread of Ebola from Africa

The United States must prevent a single case of Ebola from entering the country from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the epidemic has so far sickened 900 people, and 220 deaths are suspected, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday, Reuters writes.

“We cannot and will not allow a single case of Ebola to enter the United States,” Rubio told President Donald Trump at a cabinet meeting.

Rubio explained that US agencies, including the State Department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Health, are making major efforts to combat the crisis on the ground. He pointed out that Washington has stepped up aid to affected countries, primarily DR Congo, to ensure that the epidemic is contained at its source.

As a precaution, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last week imposed a 30-day entry restriction for travelers who have been in the DR Congo, Uganda or South Sudan in the past 21 days. The measure also covers people with permanent residence, so-called green card holders. In addition, passengers from these countries undergo additional checks at three US airports.
