Liverpool is not finding a rhythm this season, defeats are piling up, and what the team is showing on the field is far from the game of an expensive, experienced and once champion team.
Each new failure opens up space for a new avalanche of criticism, and among the loudest this season is Wayne Rooney, who in his podcast dissects the performances of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and other key players almost every week. That’s no surprise, of course, commentating is now his job.
Rooney especially criticizes Salah’s insufficient defensive involvement.
“Salah doesn’t help the team defensively. If you’re one of the players who arrived this summer, you sit on the bench and watch him not run… of course you wonder what message that sends. He’s a legend at the club and you should always respect everything he’s done for Liverpool, but it just doesn’t look good in this situation,” said Rooney.
Liverpool is currently in 11th place, with six wins and six losses, and a negative goal difference.
Rooney understands that the team is also affected by off-field circumstances, but he believes that this cannot be an excuse.
“They are going through a difficult period. We must not ignore the tragedy that struck Diogo Jota. How it affects the team, the loss of teammates and friends… surely leaves a mark. But that is no excuse for them not to fight and show their desire,” he added.
When it comes to coach Arne Slott, Rooney believes he has an extremely demanding job ahead of him.
“Slot has a huge task, he has to make the team play better and win. And there is the constant comparison with Jürgen Klopp. It reminds of what happened at Manchester United after the departure of Alex Ferguson. When Moyes came, then Van Gaal – Ferguson’s name was constantly present. Now it’s the same with Slot. Klopp’s name keeps popping up. He’s not Jürgen Klopp. He’s not as good as Jürgen Klopp. But Liverpool fans have to leave it behind and support him,” concluded Rooney.
