Real Madrid started a new legal battle with the umbrella house of European football – UEFA.
Together with the company A22 Sports Management, which is behind the Superliga project, Real decided to sue UEFA and request even 4.5 billion euros in damages.
Namely, Real accuses UEFA of abusing its dominant position and preventing competition, and bases the entire lawsuit on the verdict. Court of the European Union on antitrust law.
Real and A22 Sports Management are demanding 4.5 billion euros due to lost profits, damaged reputation and damage caused by UEFA’s threats against clubs not to join the Super League project.
Let us remind you that in April 2021 twelve elite European clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Juventusannounced the establishment of the Super League – a competition that would be a direct competitor to the UEFA Champions League, promising higher incomes to all participantsconsidering the decades-long “stinginess” of UEFA, which gives clubs only a small part of the “pie”, while every year it generates more and more income.
However, under enormous pressure from UEFA the project collapsed in just 48 hours. UEFA threatened the clubs that they would bear the consequences and that they would not be able to play national championships, so the English clubs, and then almost all the others, gave up on the Super League.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus remained alone in the project, but later Juve and Barca also gave up, so it is Real Madrid remained the only proponent of the Superliga.
President of Real Madrid Florentino Pérez he continued to look for the possibility of establishing a Superliga, and a series of legal proceedings followed. The overture to the final lawsuit was made at the end of 2023, when the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that UEFA’s rules on approving new competitions violated EU law.
It remains to be seen whether Real will succeed this time in their intention to start the Super League, and whether they will be joined by the other 11 greats from 2021 who then said “yes”.
