The recognition ceremony is scheduled on the eve of the high-level conference on the Palestinian Statehood, which will be held as part of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirms that Portugal will recognize the state of Palestine. The official declaration will be published on Sunday, 21. September, immediately before the conference next week,” said in a statement published on the Ministry’s website.
According to the Corriio da MANHA, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro, the head of the center-right, consulted with the President and Parliament before the final decision.
With this act, the end of the nearly fifteen-year-old debate in the Portuguese parliament, which began in 2011. when the party left block first presented the proposal of the Provision of Palestine.
The announcement of Portugal followed only a few days after the UN report, which concludes that the Israeli military campaign in Gaza has genocide features.
