No one should have to flee their homes because of bomb threats, said Lav, the head of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.
The lust for power and verbal violence must give way to the pursuit of justice and truth, he said, adding that the innocent must no longer shed tears.
Peace is possible even in these times of tension and conflict, the Pope said. “It becomes possible when we choose to listen to the cries of those who are denied peace: innocent children, worried mothers and fathers, abused prisoners, refugees and people of all ages who are suffering,” he said. All “have everything but one word on their lips: peace!”
The Pope also addressed individuals, saying that everyone has a personal responsibility. All people can contribute to a more peaceful society with small but important steps, he said, calling for refraining from verbal and physical violence in daily life as well as on social networks.
This was the Pope’s second great prayer for peace. In April, his stark warning about “delusions of omnipotence” becoming increasingly unpredictable and aggressive irritated US President Donald Trump.
Trump then verbally attacked the American Pope, and his response filled the headlines of the global media.
