The handover of the planes – believed to number just under twelve – “is part of alliance policy in support of Ukraine and maintaining security on NATO’s eastern flank,” the general staff said on Tuesday night.
Poland is replacing its Soviet-era MiGs with F-16s from the United States and South Korean FA-50s.
Talks on Ukrainian missile and drone technology are ongoing, the general staff said, with the main goal of “acquiring and jointly developing new defense and industrial competencies.”
In 2023, Poland sent 10 MiG-29s to Ukraine. The transfer of the remaining planes has been planned since then.
The Ukrainian Air Force now has several dozen MiG-29s, which make up the largest component of its aircraft. They are currently acquiring F-16s and French Mirage aircraft.
