Panel discussion “Personalized Medicine in Bosnia and Herzegovina was attracted to special attention”, in which key actors from the academic community, health care institutions, patient organization, and Public Sector Organization Doc. dr. Honey. Sci. Berisa Hasanbegović (KCUS), doc. dr. Sci. Riyadh Konjogodzic (Alea Genetic Center), Prim. mr. Sci. dr. Enis Hasanović (Ministry of Health KS), Mr. Nermina Planinčić (association “myel in BiH”), Ph.D. Adna Ašić (Verlab Institute).
Dr. Lejla Gurbeta Pokvić from the Verlab Institute looked at the European Practice from the Medical University of Wroclaw, the example of the Personalized Medicine, where the association of basic science, applied research and clinical practices. The goal of today’s events was Strengthening the cooperation of ecosystem in BiH to use the opportunities offered through the EIT Health network, where the Verlab Institute is a representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and join EU funds for improving personalized medicine. “
Participants agreed that Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently not enough connected to the field of genomics, bioinformatics and bioethics. The key priority in the coming period will not only improve knowledge, but also the systemic connection of all actors – regardless of where they work – as well as strategic pressure on regulatory changes that enable the integration of modern technologies in clinical practice.
The additional wind in the back is also a recently approved Cost action taken by Dr. Adna Ašić, thus having Bosnia and Herzegovina resources for organizing research work in the field of personalized medicine internationally. Also, the Clinic for the Oncology of the University of Sarajevo (KCUS) has previously become part of the Interact-Europe 100 project, which is part of a network of cancer within which experts exchange knowledge and provide better help to patients.
This is a clear indicator that experts from BiH have knowledge and capacities to be equal actors in the European research space.
The event showed that the health community is ready for cooperation. The improvement of personalized medicine in BiH is no longer an option, but the needs identified by patients, and health workers, and system holders.
