McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were disqualified from the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Sunday after a technical inspection determined that the floor skids on their cars did not meet the required minimum thickness of 9mm.
According to the FIA press release, the floor panels on both cars were too thin – by 0.12mm at the front and 0.07mm at the rear. The FIA emphasized that it was an unintentional violation and that there was no attempt to consciously circumvent the technical rules.
With the disqualification, Norris and Piastri were left without the points won for second and fourth place, which further complicated the fight for the title. Norris’ lead in the overall standings is now just 24 points, with Piastri and Max Verstappen tied.
Norris expressed great displeasure after the decision.
A frustrating end to the day. We had to manage the pace a bit more towards the end of the race, and now we know that it was due to some problems with our car, which unfortunately resulted in our disqualification. It’s frustrating to lose so many points. As a team we are always pushing to find as many performances as possible and obviously today we haven’t hit the right balance. Nothing I do now can change that, the focus now shifts to Qatar, where we will try to give the best possible performanceNorris said.
Piastri also briefly commented on the decision.
Disappointing to leave this weekend no points after an unfortunate disqualification due to skate wear. We are always looking for where we can gain in terms of performance, and this time we didn’t hit it. Now we have to reset, refocus and try to score as many points as possible in the last two racesPiastri said.
