Musk clashed publicly with Trump supporters for the first time

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, vowed last night to “go to war” to defend the H-1B visa program for foreign technology workers, fueling a dispute between longtime supporters of US President-elect Donald Trump and newly acquired supporters from technological industry.

“The reason I’m in America, along with so many people responsible for building SpaceX, Tesla, and hundreds of other companies that have made America strong, is because of H-1B,” Musk posted on X.

“You can’t even imagine how much I will fight for this issue,” he added.

Musk, a naturalized American citizen born in South Africa, was an H-1B visa holder.

His electric car company, Tesla, received 724 this year alone. H-1B visas are usually issued for three years, and holders can extend them or apply for a green card afterward.

On Friday, Steve Bannon, a longtime Trump confidant, criticized the “big tech oligarchs” for supporting the H-1B program and described immigration as a threat to Western civilization.

In response, Musk and many other tech billionaires have drawn a line between legal immigration and illegal immigration.
