Benfica won 4:2 against Real, and goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scored the deciding goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time. Due to the outcome of the other matches that were played in the same period, Benfica was not satisfied with an “ordinary” victory against Real, and all of that was a bit confusing for the actors of the match who at some moments did not know how to behave on the field.
“I remember winning or losing at the last moment, it happened to me several times, but this situation where you win, but with an insufficient score, has never happened. We had to take a risk because in the end this ball could have led to a score of 3:3, and we would have been eliminated. A victory against Real Madrid always carries a significant weight. This victory is historic,” began Mourinho.
He also explained the reason for sending the goalkeeper to the opponent’s penalty area.
“When I introduced Ivanovic and Antonio, I had no idea if 3:2 was enough. They came in to secure the win. When we realized it wasn’t enough, I sent Otamendi to play forward, I couldn’t make more changes. When there was a foul, I sent Trubin forward. Dahl stayed in midfield. To avoid going there with 11 players, we went with 10, and the little player stayed behind,” he explained.
At the end, he concluded in a joking tone:
“I appeal to many of these people not to commit suicide or jump from the balcony, calm down. Benfica will lose and you will be angry with us again, the only thing I would like is a little respect for Benfica and for the players”.
