“Right after Hungary took over the EU presidency, Orbán traveled to Moscow, and let’s remember that a few days after that, the fiercest Russian attacks on Ukraine followed, let’s hope that won’t happen this time,” Merz said at a joint press conference after meeting with Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob.
Merz said that Orbán traveled to Moscow “without a European mandate” and did not “make an agreement with us”.
Golob said that ‘Orban has not been playing in the European team for a long time.’
‘We do not expect any benefit or advantage from this trip. Orban is acting in his own interest,’ said Golob.
Both Merz and Golob emphasized the need for a quick agreement on the frozen Russian funds in the European Union as one of the mechanisms to stop the war in Ukraine.
‘We must do everything in our power to stop this war. And in order to achieve that, the use of Russian funds is, in my opinion, an ideal and correct instrument,’ said Merz.
He emphasized that he understands the reserves of Belgium, where the company Euroclear is located, which controls the frozen funds of Russia, but he emphasized that the solution is increasingly urgent.
“Belgium’s arguments are clear to me, but we also have good arguments,” said Merz regarding the conversation he had with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, reports Hina.
