Merz said he had a constructive dialogue with von der Leyen and De Wever and admitted that Belgium is justifiably concerned about the possibility of using frozen Russian assets, Flemish television VRT reported.
– We agree that, given the current geopolitical situation, time is of the essence for action. Financial support to Ukraine is crucial for the security of Europe. Tonight we had a very constructive exchange of views on this topic. Belgium’s specific concerns about the potential use of frozen Russian assets are indisputable and must be addressed in any potential solution, so that all countries bear the same risk – said Merz.
He announced that the discussion on the use of frozen Russian assets will continue at the EU summit on December 18.
The conversation between Merz and von der Leyen with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in Brussels about the frozen Russian assets lasted about two hours. They arrived at De Wever’s residence shortly after 7 p.m.
