She was welcomed by two patients, an 11-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl, who led her to a festively decorated hall at Children’s National Hospital in the US capital.
The First Lady sat in a big red chair in front of a tall Christmas tree reading Mac Barnett’s story “How Does Santa Claus Go Down the Chimney?” to a group of about twenty small patients and others gathered.
“I’m sure Santa will visit you all this Christmas and bring you lots of toys, and I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” Melania said as she finished reading.
She added that President Donald Trump also sends them love and best wishes.
The first lady spoke individually to the children in the audience before going to visit patients in the hematology and oncology department.
Santa, who attended the meeting with the children, gave Melania a gold-colored coin with the words “Believe” and “Merry Christmas” written on it.
The wife of the US president brought gifts to the patients, including Christmas tree decorations with the inscription “Be Best”, which is the name of her child welfare initiative.
Her visit to the hospital is a continuation of the holiday tradition started by Bess Truman, who was first lady from 1945 to 1953, AP recalled.
