– Human rights and peace are inextricably linked to each other: respect for the former crucially supports the latter, while the absence of peace dilutes the hope for the protection of rights and freedom – said the head of the Italian state.
According to him, this obvious connection helps us understand that peace is the result of daily commitment and shared responsibility, based on protecting the dignity of each person and rejecting the logic of subordination.
– In this sense, international law and multilateral institutions play a key role, as instruments of real protection, both for states and for every human being. Weakening them means exposing every person – especially the most vulnerable – to the risk that their existence will be regulated by arrogance and abuse of power – he said.
Mattarella said that human rights are under multiple attacks today.
“Wars – old and new – are once again casting a shadow on civilians, killing defenseless people and causing widespread suffering and destruction, as painfully confirmed by the news reporting on today’s conflicts,” he said.
– Violence against women and minors, discrimination, erosion of democratic freedoms often result in a general reduction of legal culture, moving it away from the goals we thought had been achieved. Once again, we are witnessing the reappearance of racism, aggression, inequality: phenomena that history has already warned us not to repeat – he stated.
He said that “firm support” for an international order based on respect for human rights stems from Italian history and “from the values contained in our Constitution: the rejection of war, the promotion of justice, the affirmation of solidarity, equality and freedom”.
– These are precisely the values that inspired the construction of Europe, which over time has become an unprecedented area of peace and justice – concluded Mattarella.
