Crystal Palace took the lead in the 36th minute, when Jean-Philippe Mateta accurately converted the penalty. Significantly, the penalty had to be repeated because on the first attempt Mateta touched the ball twice, which according to the new rules from July this year is the reason for repeating the kick.
Although the rule caused discussion, as the player in such a case gets a second chance without consequences for the mistake, Mateta was safe and gave Palace the lead.
Manchester United quickly turned it around though. In the 54th minute, Bruno Fernandes sent a vertical ball from a free kick towards Zirkzee, who somehow sent it into Palace’s net from a blind corner.
Only nine minutes later, the visitors scored the winning goal. Mason Mount checked the home goalkeeper from a free kick with a 20-meter ground shot, making the final score 2-1.
With this victory, Manchester United leapfrogged today’s opponent and climbed to sixth place in the Premier League with 21 points. Crystal Palace currently has 20 points.
