Magyar wants to limit the flow of workers from outside the EU

Hungary’s new prime minister, Péter Magyar, limited the flow of migrant workers from non-EU countries with a government decree announced on Saturday, fulfilling a promise made to voters in the election campaign.

About 90,000 people from non-EU countries work in Hungary, which makes up about two percent of the workforce, reports HINA.

Most of them are employed in the battery and automotive industry, in construction, seasonal jobs in agriculture and in delivery services. Most of them come from the Philippines, Ukraine, China, Vietnam and India.

Magyar justified the measure by saying that more Hungarians should be employed and to prevent companies from reducing wages by hiring foreigners. According to the data of industrial associations and employers’ associations, there is an evident labor shortage in numerous sectors in Hungary.

The new decree stipulates that existing residence permits remain valid until they expire, but it is not specified whether they can be extended.
