During his visit to Berlin, Magyar said that the technical negotiations on the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine are progressing encouragingly and that they could be completed as early as this week. If an agreement is reached, he is ready to talk with Zelenski.
The improvement of relations between Hungary and Ukraine is also important for the European Union’s support to Kyiv. Unlike Orban, who has often blocked aid to Ukraine and its European path, Magyar seeks to build more constructive relations with EU partners.
The new Hungarian government has already secured the unblocking of 16.4 billion euros of European funds that were frozen during Orbán’s rule, while continuing reforms in the fight against corruption.
However, Magyar emphasizes that for the Hungarian side to support Ukraine’s entry into the EU, it is necessary to resolve the issue of the rights of around 150,000 ethnic Hungarians living in Ukraine, especially when it comes to the use of their native language.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that he understands Budapest’s demands, but believes that bilateral issues must not slow down European support for Ukraine and the start of accession negotiations.
During the European tour, Magyar has already visited Poland and Austria, and after Germany he is traveling to France. This week, Budapest will also host the Irish Prime Minister.
