Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Thursday that all “misunderstandings” with the United States over Ukraine had been resolved following a meeting earlier this month between President Vladimir Putin and US envoy Steve Witkoff.
The Kremlin described the December 2 meeting with Witkoff and Jared Kushner as “constructive,” although no significant breakthroughs were made in resolving the war in Ukraine.
Lavrov said Thursday that the talks confirmed “mutual understandings” reached by Putin and then-US President Donald Trump at a summit in Alaska in August.
– I believe that misunderstandings and communication barriers have now been resolved – Lavrov said.
He added that Russia wants a package of documents that would support a long-term and sustainable peace agreement in Ukraine, with security guarantees for all parties involved.
– We conveyed additional proposals on collective security guarantees to our American colleagues – said Lavrov. “We understand that when we talk about security guarantees, we cannot limit ourselves only to Ukraine.”
Lavrov also stressed that Russia will not accept Ukraine’s membership in NATO and that Moscow is seeking the protection of Russian speakers in Ukraine.
