The date July 11 is also marked as the “International Day of Remembrance and Commemoration of the Genocide Committed in Srebrenica in 1995”, after the General Assembly of the United Nations voted on the Resolution on the Genocide in Srebrenica on May 23, 2024 this year.
Thousands and thousands of family members of victims, survivors, participants of the Peace March, local and international officials and citizens from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the world gathered today at the Srebrenica – Potočari Memorial Center to pay their respects to the victims of the genocide.
The victims who were buried this year were between the ages of 20 and 56.
Among them are three young men who were in their twenties at the time of their death and who will only now find their final peace. These are innocent people who were killed in the area of Vlasenica, Zvornik, Bratunac and Srebrenica, and whose remains were exhumed years later from various mass graves.
The remains of two victims were found and exhumed as early as 1997, while the remains of the other victims were exhumed between 2001 and 2022 in the locations of Kamenica, Jelovačka česma, Budak, Glogova…
The youngest victim who will be buried this year is Senad (Zaim) Jusić, born in 1975, who was 20 years old at the time of his death. He disappeared in July 1995 in the area of Bratunac, and his remains were exhumed in 2022 at the site of Kameničko brdo.
The oldest victim is Ramo (Mustafa) Dautović, born in 1939. Ramo was born in Srebrenica, disappeared in the area of Zvornik, and his remains were exhumed in 2001 after the discovery of the Kamenica – Čančari mass grave. He will be buried next to his brother Jusa, who was buried earlier.
The Institute for Missing Persons of BiH continues the search for 900 victims of the genocide, as well as for the remaining victims whose remains have not been found to date.
Today, the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina passed a Decision declaring July 11, 2026, the Day of Remembrance of the Genocide in Srebrenica, as the Day of Mourning in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Day of Mourning is marked by the mandatory display of the flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina at half-mast, i.e. mast, on the buildings of legislative, executive and judicial authorities, public institutions, institutions and other legal entities in the territory of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Ten accused of genocide and other crimes committed in Srebrenica in July 1995 are unavailable to domestic justice and warrants have been issued for them, which judicial authorities in Serbia ignore, while experts warn of a lack of political will to prosecute them in the neighboring country.
Indictments were brought and confirmed against certain officers of the Republika Srpska Army (VRS) and the police in BiH more than 10 years ago, while the judiciary in Serbia, even when it takes over the case, reclassifies the crime from genocide to a crime against the civilian population, but does not achieve results in processing high-ranking perpetrators, writes N1 BiH.
