Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government plans to extend the return to nuclear power by establishing a legal framework until the end of 2027, Italian media reported on Thursday.
– Italy is ready to return to nuclear energy. It is an important decision that will not replace renewable energy sources, but complement them in order to ensure a balanced and sustainable combination of energy – said Minister of Energy Gilberto Pichetto Fratin for the Italian daily Il Sole 24 Ore.
An initial draft of the framework law is expected to be presented to the government soon, he said during the interview.
Italy ceased its nuclear power operations after the Chernobyl disaster, and the last nuclear power plants were closed after a referendum in 1990.
Since taking office in late 2022, Rep. Meloni’s government has consistently announced its intention to return to nuclear power, with a particular focus on small modular reactors and fusion reactors. Specific details, however, remain undisclosed.
Opposition parties and environmentalists criticized these plans, reports Reuters.
