Italian citizen Gianluca Di Gioia, employed in the diplomatic service of the EU, was killed in a tiger-shark attack during his vacation in the glamorous Egyptian resort of Sataya on the coast of the Red Sea, European media reported today.
Di Gioia (48) was swimming in the sea together with his friend Giuseppe Fapani (69), but the swimming took a terrifying turn due to a sudden attack by a tiger shark, the Mail Online portal reports.
In an interview with Italian daily Corriere Della Sera, Fapani’s wife described the brutal attack on Di Gio as she watched helplessly from a nearby pier.
According to her, she saw her husband swimming towards Di Gio in a desperate attempt to ward off the shark before he himself was attacked and his arms and legs crushed.
She says that at one point Fapani allegedly only managed to push the shark away for a moment before it returned and finished off Di Gioia in a vicious attack.
