Israel’s express response: They targeted the Iranian petrochemical complex

Israel’s military confirmed on Monday that its air force hit multiple targets at a petrochemical complex in Mahshahr, southwest Iran.

It is the first attack on energy infrastructure since US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire in April.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it targeted Israeli military bases in Nevatim and Tel Nof in retaliation, following an earlier Israeli attack on radar positions in Iran.

According to the Fars agency, the IRGC said it is ready for all scenarios and broad operations on all fronts. Explosions were heard in Tehran, Tabriz and Isfahan, while the Israeli military announced it had struck military targets in western and central Iran.

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee confirmed that Iranian missiles hit Israeli territory on Sunday, saying he heard loud detonations overhead while staying in a shelter.

Local officials in Khuzestan province said that an Israeli missile damaged the Karun petrochemical plant near Bandar-e-Mahshahr, Reuters writes.

The Israeli army announced that it had detected new rockets fired from Iran towards Israeli territory and that defense systems had been activated to intercept the threat.

Israel’s ambassador in Washington announced on social media that the attacks followed Iran’s rocket attacks on Israeli targets in Lebanon, where Hezbollah positions were previously bombed.

Oil prices rose by more than three dollars per barrel on Monday. Brent crude jumped $3.20, or 3.39 percent, to $96.24 a barrel, while U.S. futures rose $2.87, or 3.17 percent, to $93.41.

According to Israeli officials, Trump and Netanyahu spoke by phone on Sunday. According to Axios, the American president called on the Israeli prime minister to refrain from new strikes because he is close to reaching a good agreement.

Iran previously said that any peace agreement with the US depends on a ceasefire in Lebanon, where the Israeli army has been conducting operations against Hezbollah since March.

Until Sunday, Iran had not directly attacked Israel since the ceasefire began in April, although Hezbollah forces have continued to attack across the border.
