At least 17 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Bureij refugee camp and the town of Jabaliya in the Gaza Strip on January 1, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported, Reuters reports.
One strike hit a home in the Jabaliya area of northern Gaza, the most isolated and heavily devastated part of the territory, where Israel has been conducting a major operation since early October.
The Gaza Ministry of Health announced that seven people, including a woman and four children, were killed and at least ten wounded.
Another strike late on December 31 in the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza killed a woman and a child, according to Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, which received their bodies.
Indirect ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas – considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union – were held in Doha in December with the mediation of Qatar, Egypt and the US.
The war in the Gaza Strip began on October 7, 2023, with an attack provoked by Hamas on Israel, when, according to Israeli data, about 1,200 people were killed, while the militants captured 251 hostages.
Another 96 hostages are in the Gaza Strip, including 34 the military says are dead.
In Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip, more than 45,553 people were killed, according to the authorities in that territory controlled by Hamas.
