The committee approved the amendment to the criminal law, which will now be sent to parliament for a first reading vote. A bill in Israel is passed into law after being voted on in the third reading.
According to Israeli hostage ombudsman Gal Hirsch, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported the initiative.
The board’s explanation stated that “its goal is to cut terrorism in the bud and create a strong deterrent.”
The bill states that “a terrorist convicted of murder motivated by racism or hatred (…) must be sentenced to death”, adding that this sentence would not be subject to review, reports Hina.
The law was referred to the procedure by a representative from the Otzma Yehudit (Jewish Power) party of far-right Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir.
Ben-Gvir has threatened to stop voting in favor of Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition if the bill is not put to a vote in parliament by November 9.
“Any terrorist preparing to commit murder must know that there is only one punishment: the death penalty,” the minister said in a statement on Monday.
