“We will not close the Strait of Hormuz, but it is our inviolable right to preserve peace and security in this waterway,” Amir Saeid Iravani told reporters at the UN.
He pointed out that Iran remains committed to freedom of navigation and blamed the United States for the current situation in the strait.
“The current situation in the region, including the Strait of Hormuz, is not the result of Iran’s legitimate exercise of its right to self-defense. It is a direct consequence of the destabilizing moves of the United States that launched aggression against Iran and undermined regional security,” he added.
Iran still categorically maintains that ships associated with the United States and Israel cannot pass through the area. It also states that every other country must get permission before its ships can pass through the strait.
