Taremi pointed out that for his national team, this year’s World Cup was marked by tension, and not the usual feeling of excitement that accompanies the biggest football competition in the world.
“People usually feel excitement while waiting for the World Cup, but we felt the tension from the very beginning. From the moment we arrived at this tournament, we are under pressure. In such an atmosphere, it is difficult to have that beautiful experience full of peace and joy that we all talk about”said Taremi.
The Iranian national team faced major problems in preparing for the tournament due to the consequences of political and diplomatic tensions between Iran and the USA.
The original plan was for the national team to establish a base camp in the city of Tucson, in the state of Arizona, but due to visa problems and diplomatic circumstances, the camp was moved to Tijuana, Mexico.
Because of this, the players were forced to travel by plane to Los Angeles for the first game, and the trip lasted about five hours. Also, it is stated that the American authorities did not issue visas for 12 members of the coaching staff of the Iranian national team.
“We are not the only ones going through this. Many countries have had problems with visas and had to change their training camps. This kind of atmosphere at the World Cup undermines FIFA’s message that football brings peace”said Taremi.
He added that he regrets that the tournament is not held in a better atmosphere and expressed the hope that better conditions will be created for all participants in the future.
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei also warned that such circumstances negatively affect the spirit of the sport.
“Without any doubt, this kind of environment has a negative effect on the spirit of football. Regardless of whether we win or lose, this is a very painful situation. Football should connect peoples and cultures. We try to allow the players to focus solely on tactics and the game,” said Ghalenoei.
Iran will play all three group stage matches in the United States of America. After the meeting against New Zealand, duels against Belgium on June 22 and Egypt on June 27 await him.
