Food prices in Bosnia and Herzegovina are steadily rising, regardless of occasional drops on the world market. Residents feel this every day, through increasingly expensive staple foods and thinner wallets. While in the world prices are sometimes corrected downwards, in Bosnia and Herzegovina this trend almost never reaches the store shelves. At the same time, increases in the price of communal services put additional pressure on citizens, especially those with the lowest incomes, he writes Večernji list BiH.

Inflation in Bosnia and Herzegovina is twice as high as in the European Union, according to data from Eurostat and the BiH Agency for Statistics. So in September, inflation in Bosnia and Herzegovina amounted to 4.2 percent, while in the European Union it was 2.2 percent. Life in Germany became less expensive in October than before. Nevertheless, at 2.3 percent, inflation is still above the two percent limit, the Federal Statistical Office confirmed earlier data. On the other hand, consumer prices in Bosnia and Herzegovina in September compared to the previous month of this year were on average 0.2 percent higher.
Alcoholic beverages and tobacco in September compared to August of this year are on average more expensive by 0.2 percent, clothing and footwear by 0.6 percent, housing and overhead expenses by 1.2 percent, healthcare by 0.2 percent, communications by 1.3 percent, education by 1.3 percent, and restaurants and hotels by 0.7 percent. On average, the price of food and non-alcoholic beverages fell by 0.2 percent, transportation by 0.4 percent, and other goods and services by 0.2 percent, the BiH Statistics Agency announced.

Clothing and footwear were cheaper on average by 7.5 percent and transportation by 0.8 percent.
Falling prices
By comparison, inflation in Germany slowed in September 2024, reflecting a stronger fall in energy prices, preliminary data from the statistics office Destatis showed. Consumer prices were higher by 1.6 percent compared to the same month last year. In August, they were higher by 1.9 percent. Price changes were not recorded compared to August, when they fell by 0.1 percent. Excluding food and energy prices, the annual inflation rate was 2.7 percent, slightly lower than in August.
On the annual level, the prices of energy and motor fuel for households fell the most, by 7.6 percent. In August, they were lower by 5.1 percent. Commodity prices almost stagnated, as in August. Services, on the other hand, rose in price by 3.8 percent in September compared to the same month last year, almost the same as at the end of summer. Food prices, on the other hand, accelerated marginally, with an annual growth rate of 1.6 percent. Inflation has been a problem for the whole world since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, and a huge number of BiH of citizens was pushed over the edge of poverty.
