Outgoing US President Joe Biden preemptively pardoned five members of his family today, just a few minutes before handing over the office to Donald Trump.
He did this in order, as he says, to prevent them from becoming the target of “groundless and politically motivated investigations”.
Among those pardoned are his two brothers, James and Francis. Also on the list are James Biden’s wife Sara, Biden’s sister Valerie and her husband John.
Biden also commuted the life sentence of Native American activist Leonard Peltier, who spent nearly five decades in federal prison for killing two FBI agents in 1975. Peltier will serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
