Clashes in Pakistani Kashmir ahead of a protest scheduled for Tuesday have killed 11 people and wounded more than 70, as police and paramilitary forces tried to disperse crowds of protesters from a banned alliance of civil society groups.
Police said protesters from the Awami Joint Action Committee, which seeks to support economic and political rights, gathered outside the hospital morgue where the body of another member of the group was taken after his death in a police-involved shootout.
– Four police officers and one passerby died after rioters shot at them. As a result of the police response, six protesters were killed – Sardar Waheed Khan, commissioner of the Poonch sector in the region, told Reuters.
