From January 1, Hungary will start controls at the border with Romania, which has joined the mainland visa-free Schengen area.
“Border checks with Romania will be re-established to prevent threats to public order and internal security,” Hungarian media reported, citing sources from the police force.
The Hungarian police warned travelers entering the country that random checks may be carried out and advised them to carry the necessary documents, Anadolia reports.
According to the newspaper Libertatea, more than 30 border crossings in Romania, which will join the Schengen area by land in 2025, will be closed.
Random checks will also continue for six months at the Bulgarian-Romanian border.
Romania and Bulgaria received permission to enter the Schengen area by land from January 1, 2025, on December 12 this year, reports Aljazeera.
