Hungary and Slovakia plan to challenge before the Court of Justice of the European Union the decision to ban the delivery of Russian oil and gas, which the European Commission intends to put to a vote next week, said Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto.
He stated that banning the import of Russian oil and gas would “impossibility of reliable energy supply for our country and Slovakia” and would lead to a sharp rise in prices.
Szijjarto assessed that this is a “legal fraud”, because according to him, sanctions can only be adopted unanimously.
He considers the intention of the European Commission to make a decision by majority vote, and not unanimously, “a complete violation of the Treaty on the European Union”.
Szijjarto reminded that energy policy is the responsibility of the member states and added that, together with the Government of Slovakia, immediately after the adoption of the decision, they will file an appeal with the European Court of Justice and request its suspension until the final verdict.
